Description
A poetry professor at San Francisco State called him an animal. Young poets in San Francisco wept when he died. He wasn't great on paper. He was an oral poet, so many of his words were never set to paper. When he walked down the street people followed him like the Pied Piper. He attracted adoring crowds at all of his readings. When he died, at the wake, so many of us related stories of his sojourns living with us, burning up frying pans, splattering gesso on our floors, gouache on our dining room tables, filling the air with barked incitements to live at our fullest every moment. He was a joyous, generous spirit of a man, though flawed and tragic in his own life. He had nothing to give but endless encouragement.
