Artist's Description
Guelaguetza is an ancient folk festival unique to the State of Oaxaca in Southern Mexico, where I lived for 14 years. Occurring every July, it was originally a corn festival presided over by the Zapotec goddess Xilonen. It is now a region-wide celebration, where dancers from many distinctive ethnic groups and pueblos show off their traditional costumes and folk dancing. The celebration I photographed was held in the tiny village of San Tomás. Other than myself, there was not a tourist in sight, another demonstration that Oaxacans put on the best fiestas for themselves.
