Description
Art is part of life in Oaxaca, and this outside installation in the churchyard of dugout canoes was enchanting. Another one close by was filled with marigolds. The beloved artist Rudolfo Morales of nearby Ocotlan de Morelos infused this tiny pueblo of Zegache with his spirit. Morales was a magical realist painter who spent much of his time supporting and inspiring the indigenous Zapotec community, especially the women. He died in 2001 of AIDS. It was not unusual for tears to come into people's eyes when I asked if they knew him. His house in Ocotlan was always open to visitors after his death, and I visited many times.
