Description
After traveling 28 kilometers south of the city of Oaxaca, a sign welcomes you to Santa Ana Zegache, land of migrants and, for almost 20 years, also land of outstanding art restorers, men and women who with refined techniques not only returned the splendor to their temple, but have made this trade a way of remaining on the land.
The hands that shape the wood are expert, the finishes are fine, an art that has managed to take root in the population of this community that, like so many others in Oaxaca, spends entire periods devoid of men and increasingly more women who migrate to the United States in search of the American dream. From a ghost town of barely 2,000 inhabitants, says Georgina Saldaña, former coordinator of the restoration workshops, it became “a town that fights against its reality.” And all through art.

The facade of a vibrant, ornate church is adorned with colorful decorations, including intricate patterns and hanging banners. Two symmetrical towers flank the main entrance, setting a festive and historic atmosphere.
