Description
I took this picture of a bunch of Mayan candles I bought in the indigenous marketplace in San Cristobal, Chiapas, Mexico. These candles are used by Mayan priests during healing ceremonies in a small church that had been repurposed as an indigenous place of spiritual practice. All the benches had been removed and ceremonies were held on the floor by small circles of families who had gathered around their priest of choice. Catholic saints and icons had been removed or redecorated with indigenous symbols. There were thousands of these slender candles burning to light up the windowless chapel. The priests heat up the bottom of each candle and stick them on the floor, and their heat warms the room.
The decorative frame is colored pencil.
