Description
“2501 Migrantes” was a historic sculpture exhibit in 2012 of 2,501 life-sized clay statues created by Oaxacan artist ALEJANDRO SANTIAGO RAMIREZ in the mod-2000s. He created it after returning to his Zapotec village and finding that 2,500 people, more than half of the population, had moved to find work in Northern Mexico or the United States. He decided to memorialize this loss by creating, with the help of villagers that he trained and supervised, 2,500 clay statues,plus one that represented himself. The exhibit was placed in the desert near the frontera, the border between Mexico and the United States for several months and was returned to Oaxaca where I was living. The figures were on display on the streets and Plazas surrounding Santo Domingo Cathedral.
A trio of rustic sculptures is displayed in front of a vibrant yellow and red building, suggesting a cultural or artistic venue. A golden decorative tree with sparkling elements stands next to the sculptures, adding a touch of whimsy to the scene.
