Description
Every November 1 and 2 Mexico and Mexican communities around the world celebrate Days of the Dead. November 1 is for the children. Festivities in Oaxaca City where I lived started going on October 30, and culminated with a parade/procession to the Panteon (graveyard) where families were already gathered in candlelight around the graves of their ancestors which were decorated and laden with offerings of fruit, chapulines (fried crickets), flowers, cigarettes and alcohol (according to the habits of the deceased) and other sentimental objects and photographs. Individual families hire bands to play on top of an orchestra concert at 8 pm. Colored sand paintings are spread on the ground, and the smell of burning copal, Mexico's incense, wafts through the air.
I took this photograph of a graveyard near Lake Catemaco, Veracruz, Mexico, in 2015.
