Description
The fishermen here use nets of seaweed-like plants to catch their fish, which they pull out with their hands, no fishing lines. It's impossible to get around Lake Catemaco, the second largest lake in Mexico, without a car. I didn't drive, so I hired a taxi, and became friends with the driver and later his family. I saw things I never would have seen without a native showing me the way. The giant lake is often choppy with gusts of warm air blowing across it. This area of extinct volcanos is where many of the giant Olmec heads were found, the center of one of the oldest cultures on earth. It is a mysterious and powerful place, and is also known for its "brujas" spiritual healers. Mexican people come here for cures. On the other side of the lake are yoga and bath centers for visitors.
