Lake Catemaco is a primordial body of water, the second largest lake in Mexico. It is located in the State of Veracruz, not far from the Gulf Coast, and is surrounded by jungle, marshes, gardens, dwellings, and the little town of Catemaco. This region was populated by the most ancient culture in Mexico, the Olmecs, and many of the giant stone heads were found nearby, or submerged in the lake. The mountains on the west shore of the lake are known as the Tuxtlas, an ancient volcanic range that runs along the south shore of the Gulf of Mexico.
The cattle found around the lake come from a breed imported by the Spanish in the 1500s, and are originally from India. This calf, unfenced, allowed me to walk up very close by to take this photo.
